Hiking the Lusen – Himmelsleiter, boulder field and route tips

The 1,373-metre Lusen combines steep granite steps, an extraordinary summit boulder field and wide views across the forest landscape. With good planning, you will experience one of the most striking mountains in the national park.

The famous Himmelsleiter ("stairway to heaven") is no gentle stroll: the straight climb over large granite steps requires sure-footedness, fitness and suitable footwear. At the top, the boulder field dominates the summit. It is a geological rarity – and terrain where you should move carefully and only on the marked paths.

Which route suits you?

The official tourism overview lists several options. The medium route "Übers Teufelsloch zum Lusen" (via the Devil's Hole to the Lusen) covers around 12 kilometres, about 4:30 hours and 550 metres of ascent. A longer option from Sankt Oswald-Riedlhütte is listed at around 15 kilometres, 5:45 hours and 787 metres of ascent. These are planning figures: breaks, weather, fitness and trail conditions change the actual walking time.

Tackle the Himmelsleiter and boulder field with care

The Himmelsleiter is usually climbed uphill. For the descent, a less steep option is advisable, depending on the official trail recommendation. In the boulder field, follow the markings; shortcuts damage sensitive areas and increase the risk of accidents.

Getting there and seasonal rules

Seasonal restrictions apply to the access road to Waldhausreibe. During the Igelbus season, private access is restricted during the day; outside the season the road may be closed completely. The national park administration therefore recommends checking the current travel information and the Lusen bus. Timetables and closure times can change.

Before you set off: check the weather, trail and access conditions on the official national park website. In strong winds, leave the forest because of the risk of falling deadwood. Sturdy shoes, drinks, a map, a mobile phone, a first-aid kit and weather protection belong in your rucksack.

Respect in the national park

In sensitive high-altitude areas you must stay on the paths. Take nothing away, leave no litter, keep dogs on a lead and avoid noise. The special appeal of the Lusen lies precisely in experiencing the natural development of the forest attentively.
