Hiking the Rachel and Rachelsee

At 1,453 metres, the Großer Rachel is the highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest National Park. The summit, the Rachel chapel and the quiet Rachelsee lake make for an impressive but demanding mountain hike.

The classic circuit links several landscapes: from the starting point at Gfäll it climbs through mountain forest to the summit, then descends via the Rachel chapel to the glacial Rachelsee lake and back. Steep, rocky sections require sure-footedness; snow, wet conditions and storms can make the route considerably harder.

Route via summit, chapel and lake

The official national park brochure describes the circuit from Gfäll over the Großer Rachel, the Rachel chapel and the Rachelsee back to Gfäll. The stated 11 kilometres and 4:30 hours are guide values. The descent to the lake is long and steep in places; allow enough time and energy.

Other official options

The tourism association also lists a 14-kilometre option from Frauenau (around five hours, 680 metres of ascent), a 10-kilometre option from Spiegelau (around four hours, 500 metres of ascent) and a shorter option from Riedlhütte. Do not choose by distance alone – consider ascent, trail surface and current access.

Check how to get to the Rachel carefully

Access roads to Gfäll and the Racheldiensthütte are subject to seasonal rules. During the Igelbus season, private vehicles are partly excluded during the day; outside the season, other rules and winter restrictions apply. Shortly before your hike, check the current information from the national park administration and the Igelbus timetable.

Current information over habit: protected areas, roadworks, snow and storms can change routes or access. Follow the signs on site and turn back in good time if conditions are uncertain.

Rachelsee: observe quietly, respect the paths

The Rachelsee lies in a particularly sensitive part of the national park. Stay on the marked paths, avoid noise and leave plants, stones and deadwood untouched. Swimming is not allowed in the national park. That way the lake remains a refuge for nature – and an impressive place for future visitors.
