The Bavarian Forest is not a bike park without limits. In the national park, cycling is only permitted on routes clearly marked as cycle paths – e-bikes included. Off-trail riding and unapproved trails are off-limits. Sticking to the official routes lets you enjoy nature while respecting the protected area.
Three official route ideas around Freyung
Hohenau pond loop
According to the official route description, the loop starts at the outdoor pool car park in Freyung. It combines the Hohenau pond with a stiff climb via Wasching. The short descent to the Seehaus requires riding technique; the rest of the loop is described as easily accessible. The platform's "very easy" rating should not hide the fact that 672 metres of ascent require good fitness.
Raiderberg loop
This moderate loop, with steep climbs and descents along the way, leads via Hinterschmiding, Raiderberg, Schwendreut and Herzogsreut back to Freyung. The official description expressly points out the crossing of the B12 main road. Slow down, watch out for traffic and allow extra reserves in wet conditions.
Panorama tour along the national park
The longer panorama tour links Freyung, Kreuzberg, Mauth, the Lusen National Park Centre, Neuschönau and Hohenau. At 46 kilometres and 810 metres of ascent, it is a full day's ride. With an e-bike, plan range, battery reserve and return route in advance.
Ride safely and responsibly
- In the national park, only use clearly marked cycle routes.
- Adjust your speed to visibility, surface and oncoming traffic.
- Make hikers aware of you early and pass at a distance.
- After storms, heavy rain or forestry work, check current trail reports.
- Take a helmet, repair kit, drinks and an offline map.
